Steamed Cake: Puto Espesyal

Puto is a very popular dessert in the Philippines, commonly served during gatherings, festivals, parties, breakfast and snack ( merienda). It can be eaten with fresh grated coconut or butter. The recipe is so easy to prepare. This recipe is made of all purpose flour and I have another recipe made of rice flour, you can check it here: Puto ( Rice Muffins)

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsps baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup soften butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup evaporated milk or fresh milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup grated cheese
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg(optional)

Directions:

  1. Sift together all the dry ingredients.
  2. Cream butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well as you go on. Pour in milk and vanilla. Mix well.
  3. Fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture until evenly blended.
  4. Fill the puto molds 2/3 of the way up with the batter and top with shredded cheese.
  5. Steam for 20-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
  6. Serve warm with grated coconut or butter.
